We offer many heat treating processes to serve your needs. Our processes include Annealing, Age Hardening, Carburizing, Carbon Nitriding, Induction Hardening, Sub-Zero Freezing, Normalizing, Quench and Tempering, Solution Anneal, Stress Relieve (Post Weld Heat Treat) and Tempering. Additional services include straightening, hardness testing, sand blasting, process development and technical support.

We are able to process a variety of metals such as alloy steel, stainless steel, tool steel and carbon steel. Quench media includes air, water, oil and polymer. Our facility is ISO 9001:2015 certified and we are in compliance with many Mil-Spec standards. We also maintain an ABS Certification for offshore application.

PROCESSES

  • Annealing

    Used primarily to soften metals and to simultaneously produce desired changes in other properties or micro structures. Reasons for annealing include machinability, facilitation of cold work, improvement in mechanical or electrical properties, and to increase dimensional stability.

  • Age Hardening

    Heat treatment technique used to increase the hardness of an alloy by a relatively low-temperature heat treatment that causes precipitation of components or phases of the alloy from the supersaturated solid solution. It is used to increase the tensile and yield strength of materials, including most alloys of aluminum, magnesium/titanium/nickel and some stainless steel. In superalloys, it is known to cause yield strength anomaly, providing excellent high-temperature strength. Age hardening is also known as precipitation hardening.

  • Carburizing

    Heat treatment process in which iron or steel absorbs carbon while the metal is heated in the presence of a carbon gas to make the metal harder. When the iron or steel is cooled rapidly by quenching, the higher carbon content on the outer surface becomes hard due to the transformation from austenite to martensite, while the core remains soft and tough as a ferritic and/or pearlite microstructure.

  • Carbon Nitriding

    Heat treating process that diffuses nitrogen into the surface of a metal to create a case-hardened surface. These processes are most commonly used on low-carbon, low-alloy steels.

  • Induction Hardening

    Heat treating process used to increase the surface hardness or wear resistance of a material. Induction heating involves placing a copper coil around a material and running an alternating current through it. The shifting magnetic fields caused by an alternating current will cause the surface of the material to rise in temperature. It works especially well if the material has iron in its composition.

  • Sub-Zero Freezing

    Cold and cryogenic treatments are typically done immediately after quenching, before any tempering, and will increase the hardness, wear resistance, and reduce the internal stresses in the metal. The process is often used for tools, bearings, or other items that require good wear resistance.

  • Normalizing

    Homogenizing or grain refining treatment, with the aim being uniformity in composition throughout a part.

  • Quench and Temper

    Quenching and tempering are processes that strengthen and harden materials like steel and other iron-based alloys. The process of quenching or quench hardening involves heating the material and then rapidly cooling in water, oil, forced air or inert gases such as nitrogen. The process is tightly controlled, with the heating temperature, cooling method, cooling substance and cooling speed all dependent upon the type of material being quenched and the desired hardness. After the material has been quenched to its hardest state, the process of tempering is used to achieve greater toughness and ductility by decreasing hardness. Tempering is achieved by heating the quenched material to below the critical point for a set period of time, then allowing it to cool in still air. Both the temperature and heating time depend on the composition of the material and will determine the amount of hardness removed.

  • Solution Anneal

    A high temperature heat treating process performed on steels, particularly austenitic stainless steels in the 300 series. The castings are held at a temperature and time sufficient to bring the carbon in the steel into a solid solution. The material is then quickly cooled to lock the carbon in the solid solution. The solution anneal process results in a casting in the most corrosion resistant and ductile condition.

  • Stress Relieving

    Relieves residual stresses caused by rolling, casting, forging, bending, quenching, grinding, or welding.

  • Tempering

    Heat treatment process that is often used to improve hardness, strength, toughness, as well as decrease brittleness in fully hardened steel. The goal of tempering is to bring forth the best combination of mechanical properties in ferrous materials.
